about the Braster device

DEVICE INFORMATION / WHAT IS BRASTER?

What is the Braster System?

The Braster System is an innovative in-home breast examination system underpinned by a telemedical service. It will allow you to monitor the health of your breasts every month at your own home. The Braster System has been registered as a medical device and bears the CE marking confirming its compliance with the safety use and health protection standards pursuant to the EU directive. The medical device itself is just a part of the Braster System. The system also includes the free Braster Care app for your smartphone or tablet, the automatic interpretation system, and cooperating medical experts. The Braster System is a Polish invention and patent developed by Polish scientists. BRASTER S.A. sought the opinion of the experts from the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, who stated that the contact thermography method used in the Braster System is complementary to examinations such as mammography or breast ultrasound.

Who is the Braster System designed for?

The Braster System is designed for women of legal age who want to consciously take care of their health. Check for exceptions >> It is very important to develop a habit of self-examination as soon as possible. As the statistics on breast cancer show, cancer affects younger and younger women in whom cancer develops much faster and can double its size in just 80 days*.

How does the Braster System work?

The Braster System uses the contact thermography method to create a colorful map of breast temperature distribution. In so doing, it registers areas with elevated temperature, which can indicate abnormal changes. Using it is painless and safe, because it does not emit radiation. The examination is very simple: you only need to follow the instructions in the Braster Care app installed on your smartphone or tablet. After performing the examination, use the app to send its recording to our Telemedical Center, where it will be verified, compared, and analyzed by our Automatic Interpretation System (Braster AI). The quality of this process is supervised by medical experts. You will receive the result up to 2 working days after the examination.

What is contact thermography?

Contact thermography consists of registering thermal processes taking place inside the breast on the surface of the skin. Cancer cells differ from healthy cells due to their higher metabolic rate and the fact they create a dense network of capillaries. These processes are how sites of elevated temperatures are formed, which are registered on the surface of the examined breast. In thermograms – i.e., images presenting the temperature distribution – lesions assume a different color than that of healthy tissue, because they have a higher temperature than healthy sites. Contact thermography is a complementary examination method to mammography and breast ultrasound (according to the opinion of the experts from the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians).

Can the Braster System replace ultrasound or mammography?

The Braster System is an excellent monthly supplement to such methods as ultrasound or mammography due to the possibility of so called interval cancer that may occur between medical examinations. It can also happen that despite regular mammography or ultrasound women detect a tumor by palpation between successive examinations. However, with our fingers we are able to detect lesions of about 1 cm, while the Braster System is able to detect much smaller, abnormal changes (starting from 3 mm). Thanks to this greater precision, the diagnostic and therapeutic process can be started faster, which increases the chances of being cured. It is worth remembering that a combination of various examination methods gives the greatest effectiveness in the prophylaxis of breast cancer.

Are there any contraindications to the use of Braster?

You should not use Braster if you are being or have been treated for breast cancer. This includes all methods of treatment, including breast conserving surgical treatment, unilateral or bilateral mastectomy, pharmacotherapy (chemotherapy, hormone therapy, biological treatment), and radiotherapy. We are currently working on solutions that will allow women to perform self-examinations after treatment.
Temporary contraindications to the use of Braster:
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding (up to 3 months after weaning) due to the dynamic reconstruction of the breast structure and impossibility of applying algorithms to evaluate thermographic images;
  • systemic infections with body temperature higher than or equal to 38°C and the presence of breast inflammation with pain, redness, and lividity of the skin;
  • aesthetic implants, breast injection, e.g., with hyaluronic acid or lipotransfer (up to 12 months after these procedures);
  • removal of a breast nodule (up to 12 months after this procedure; applies to benign lesions, not breast cancer);
  • fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the breast (up to 4 weeks after this procedure), core-needle biopsy or Mammotome biopsy (up to 12 months after these procedures).

We do not recommend performing examinations using the Braster System in the second phase of the menstrual cycle due to the physiological changes in the breast structure during the menstrual cycle. The best time to perform the examination is the period between the 3rd day and the 12th day of the cycle.

Why does the device come with three matrices?

Each matrix attached to the device has a different range of sensitivity to the body’s surface temperature. Each of us has a slightly different physiological temperature that changes during the menstrual cycle and depends on many factors. Therefore, you should choose the right matrix for you before each examination. Thanks to the Braster Care app, it is very easy. Depending on the conditions in which you perform the examination, it may happen that you always use one matrix, because it is the best suited to your body temperature. However, this is not a rule – there is a chance that a different matrix will be suitable for you during each examination.

How long does it take to charge Braster, and how will I know that it is charged?

You should charge Braster for about 3 hours. When the device is charging, the orange battery level indicator will light up. When the device is fully charged, the indicator turns off – this means that you can stop charging it. Before the first use of Braster, charge the device for at least 1 hour.

How should I maintain my device?

Before performing each examination, you should disinfect and thoroughly clean the outer and inner surfaces of all three matrices. To do this, spray the surface of the matrices on both sides with one of the following products: Octenisept, Softasept, salicyl alcohol. Then, use the cloth attached to the set to wipe the black thermographic films. Before the examination, the surfaces of the matrices should be clean and free of impurities (e.g., fingerprints, dust).

BREAST EXAMINATION WITH BRASTER

What do I need to use Braster?

In order to perform the breast examination with Braster, you need the Braster medical device and a package of examinations, which you can purchase in our e-store. Before performing the first examination, please register a “My Account” on www.braster.eu and download the Braster Care mobile app, which will guide you through the examination process. You can download the app free of charge on your smartphone or tablet from Google Play or the App Store in Poland, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, depending on whether you have Android or IOS. Note: The app does not work on Samsung Galaxy J3 (6) or LG-E610.

Is the examination with Braster safe?

The examination with Braster is safe. It does not emit harmful ionizing radiation like, e.g., mammography or radiography.

What does the Braster examination look like?

Performing the examination with Braster is very simple thanks to the intuitive Braster Care app. The app will show you, step by step, how and when you should apply the device to the breast to perform the examination properly. You can see the exact course of the Braster examination in the video tutorial available on our YouTube channel.

Why should I choose a matrix for each examination?

Each matrix attached to the device has a different range of sensitivity to the body’s surface temperature. Each of us has a slightly different physiological temperature that changes during the menstrual cycle and depends on many factors. Therefore, you should choose the right matrix for you before each examination. Thanks to the Braster Care app, it is very easy. Depending on the conditions in which you perform the examination, it may happen that you always use one matrix, because it is the best suited to your body temperature. However, this is not a rule – there is a chance that a different matrix will be suitable for you during each examination.

When attaching or removing the matrix, can I touch its center (black field)?

When attaching the matrix to Braster, you should avoid touching the inner glossy side of black film with your fingers. The fingerprints left on it can reflect and diffuse light differently to the clean film. This results in the formation of light-induced artifacts in the image, which can make automatic interpretation of the image difficult. On the outer, matte side of the black film, the image is not created, so touching it has no impact on the result. Be sure to clean all three matrices before each examination.

How should I prepare for the Braster examination?

On the day before the examination, avoid procedures that may induce greater blood flow within the breasts (physiotherapy treatments, massages, etc.).
On the day of examination:
  • make sure that you are between the 3rd day and the 12th day of the menstrual cycle (information on how to check the day of the cycle is provided below), and if you do not menstruate, that the previous examination was performed 30 days ago;
  • do not take a bath or shower for at least 2 hours before the examination;
  • do not drink alcohol;
  • do not scrub the skin of the breasts and the neckline or shave the armpits, as these processes can irritate the surface of the skin;
  • do not stay close to sources of heat or cold, such as radiators or air conditioners, for about 30 minutes before the examination;
  • avoid intense physical effort for about 2 hours before the examination;
  • do not use any cosmetics on the skin of the breasts for about 2 hours before the examination – the skin should be clean and dry; and
  • do not use a sauna or steam bath.

Why should I perform the examination between the 3rd day and the 12th day of the menstrual cycle?

A phase of lower body temperature begins on the first days of the cycle, then immediately after ovulation the basal body temperature increases and remains elevated until the next menstrual period. Therefore, if you perform the examination in the first phase of your menstrual cycle, your skin will be cooler. This will make thermographic images more readable.

How can I calculate the current day of my menstrual cycle?

The menstrual cycle begins on the first day of menstruation and ends on the last day before the next menstruation. The first day of the cycle is the first day of menstrual bleeding. Each of us has a different cycle length, which averages from 21 to 34 days. The length of successive cycles may vary. Cycle length is influenced by various factors such as diet, stress, or environmental change. Regardless of the length of your cycle, be sure to perform the Braster examination between the 3rd and 12th day of the cycle.

When should I perform the examination if I do not menstruate?

If you do not menstruate for any reason (menopause, permanent use of contraceptives, intrauterine device, etc.), we recommend performing the examination at equal intervals once a month; e.g., between the 1st day and the 5th day of the month or on the 1st weekend of the month.

When should I perform the examination if I menstruate irregularly?

If the difference in the length of your monthly cycles does not exceed 10 days and falls within the range of 21–35 days, you should perform the examination in the usual time period; i.e., between the 3rd day and the 12th days of the menstrual cycle. If menstruation occurs more frequently than every 21 days or less frequently than every 35 days, we recommend you perform the examination at equal intervals once a month; e.g., between the 1st day and the 5th day of the month or on the 1st weekend of the month. In the case of irregular menstrual cycles (fluctuations of more than 10 days) or amenorrhea during the permanent use of contraceptives, you should perform examinations at equal intervals once a month; e.g., between the 1st day and the 5th day of the month or on the 1st weekend of the month.

What is acclimatization?

Acclimatization is the process of letting your body surface temperature stabilize at room temperature. During the Braster examination it is needed to stabilize the breast skin temperature, which is why the Braster Care app will ask you to undress from the waist up before performing the examination. The whole stage of acclimatization takes 6 minutes. It is very important, because it affects the quality of thermographic images registered during the Braster examination.

What am I not allowed to do during acclimatization?

During the 6-minute acclimatization, you should avoid direct airflow (such as from an air-conditioning unit), touching your breasts with your hands, scratching your skin, staying near heat sources (such as radiators). Your skin should be dry and become acclimatized in a natural way without any factors that can accelerate the process; e.g., a fan or air conditioning. Also, remember not to touch your breasts with your arms because then the skin cools more slowly.

How will I know I have applied Braster to my breast properly?

You should perform the examination according to the instructions shown in the Braster Care app. If for any reason it is performed improperly and the correct readout is prevented, you will be informed in an e-mail message with the information about the result. Should you perform the examination improperly, you will be asked to perform it again. We will also give you additional information on what you should do to perform the examination properly. In this situation, the repeated examination does not result in a reduction in the number of examinations in your package.

How will I receive the result of the examination?

Within 2 working days after the Braster examination, you will be able to read the result by logging into “My Account” on the website www.braster.eu. In addition, you will be notified by e-mail and receive a notification in the Braster Care app. All results of your previous examinations are always available on “My Account” so that you can return to them at any time.

Can more than one person use the device?

Yes, you can use one device together with other women. This allows you to share the cost of purchase among several persons. Remember, however, that each of you should separately register a “My Account” on the website www.braster.eu and purchase an individual examination package. If you perform the examinations together, one after another, each person performing the examination should log into the app with her individual username and password.

Who analyzes the results of Braster examination?

After the examination, the thermographic images are sent to our telemedical center by means of the Braster Care app. They are subject to analysis and verification by the Braster AI system (Braster automatic interpretation). The quality of the whole process is supervised by medical experts.

Why should I perform the examination every month (during each menstrual cycle)?

Examinations with Braster are evaluated by interpretation systems in two ways: automatically (evaluation of each thermographic image created in the given month) and differentially (comparison of images from several previously performed examinations to observe the changes). After you successfully perform 6 examinations at periodic intervals, an additional, free service called comparative analysis is activated. It consists of comparing the last examination to five previous examinations to verify whether the structures visible in the thermograms change over time. This process allows for the identification of minor changes in the thermal conditions of your breasts, which in the case of a single examination may seem normal. Therefore, comparative analysis can help to warn you of possibly concerning changes at an earlier stage. Performing monthly, regular examinations with Braster allows you to use both interpretation tools and thus increases the chances of the very early detection of abnormal changes.

What should I do if I receive the information that changes have been detected in my breasts?

If you get an abnormal result, it means a thermal and/or structural asymmetry has been observed in your thermographic images; i.e., one of your breasts has a higher temperature than the other. Remember that breasts have a natural, physiological thermal variability and the areas of increased temperature recorded by Braster do not necessarily indicate neoplastic changes. In the event of the abnormal result, you should consult your gynecologist as soon as possible. They should perform further diagnostics and additional imaging examinations for verification.
Each performed diagnostic examination is a valuable source of information about your breasts. If you have additional examinations such as ultrasound or mammography, please be so kind and write their results in My Account on www.braster.eu in the tab "My Account", field "Additional medical data". However, you should not stop performing examinations with Braster. Differential analysis, which compares images from several of your previous examinations, could show that such an image has resulted from the natural structure of your breasts.
